SHORT TREKS S2E4 "Ephraim and Dot" Review By AnswerMan

Horrible:Meh:Adequate:Good:Fantastic

This trek is set up as possibly a pilot for a new animated series. It follows a pregnant tardigrade as it attempts to find a place to lay its eggs. It collides with the Enterprise, and trades blows with a robot. It's cute, and has a fair amount of drama. The feel of the scenery is the same as The Animated Series, but when we see our familiar characters we see that they've gone too close to the uncanny valley.

Regardless of the familiarity, the whole thing is actually far more Looney Tunes than it is The Animated Series. It seems that Star Trek is merely the backdrop for an otherwise non-trek type of cartoon. It is interesting to see important moments of Trek set as the scenery, but we don't get engaged in these plots at all. We see Kahn, the Tholian Web, and the destruction of the Enterprise, but those aren't the stories that we're following. This little tale about a tardigrade and a tiny robot could just have easily been set anywhere else. I'm not sure what they are going for here, but they didn't get me with this one at all. It gets an importance level rating based mostly off of the important trek moments portrayed and the possibility that it is the beginning of entirely new series.

Importance level: None:Normal:Yellow Alert :Red Alert:Double Red Alert
