Horrible:Meh:Adequate:Good:Fantastic
I guess the fear of missing out is real, because I really didn't feel the urge to check out Star Trek Prodigy until I discovered that it's no longer streaming anywhere. All of a sudden I just had to see it, so I bought the DVD (which luckily are still available for purchase new). It served as a reminder of how just because something is available right now doesn't mean it always will be since we don't own our media anymore. The promise of Paramount+ was ALL OF STAR TREK. It's why I subscribed as Trek was disappearing from other platforms. But now it's all of Star Trek, minus Prodigy which will be available for a short time on Netflix and then dropped altogether. This reality has prompted me secure my own physical library of all of Star Trek. NEVER FORGET.
My first impression of Trek's third animated show (not counting that one Short Trek) was that it is quite fun! And purple! It does seem more geared towards kids, but that's ok. Some of the very best media released in human history was for kids. But so far in this series opener it does provide a different tone. Our bad guy, for instance, is just a villain. I assume we'll get more backstory eventually, but come on. The guy kidnaps orphans and forces them into slave labor? That's pretty one dimensional.
Pilots of ensemble cast shows are always about meeting the gang, and "Lost and Found" is no different. We have our main character Dal, of species unknown. He's a loveable but clunky bad-boy type. The Villain's daughter is Gwyndala. We assume she'll end up a good guy, but not yet. Her thing is a weapon that is part of her body and she speaks any language. There's Rok, who looks like a big tough guy but is actually a little girl. One of the more interesting characters is Zero, a Medusan. Like, from TOS. You remember, the thing in the box that will make you go crazy if you look at it. Pretty cool idea, although it just looks like Siri in a helmet. Jankom Pog (remember Pogs? I do!) is so far the most annoying character. He is more... cartoonish than the others and speaks in third person. And finally there's Murf. Not sure if Murf is the smartest one of them all, or is just a slug without consciousness. I have a feeling we'll be having a lot of fun with this character.
Oh and HOLLOW JANEWAY. Love me some Voyager, so I'm excited about this. I have a feeling the VOY nostalgia is going to be strong with this one. I just hope it doesn't go full Picard with it and let it overtake the original concept.
And that concept seems pretty simple. Rag tag bunch of misfits finds their way on to a missing Star Fleet ship and has adventures as they learn about the Federation way and run from the bad guys. I'm sold. This first outing for the series is Good. Even the wife seemed to enjoy it and I can't get her to watch anything either animated or Star Trek.
Oh also! I think the Villain keeps calling the daughter "Progeny?" Or surely it is "Prodigy?" I don't know, my subtitles aren't working. Surely they wouldn't hang so much on two uncommon words that sound so similar, right?
